Serra opened the note, reading it aloud to her companions.

Meet me in the garden at midnight. Come alone.

“Well that’s not conspicuous. What do you think she wants?” asked Finn. He handed the note to Theren.

She shrugged. “Not sure. Best case, she has information we can use. Worse case, she is about to threaten me as well.”

Theren grumbled. “She made a point to act like your conversation was nothing more than simple politeness. I’d say the former is most likely.”

Perhaps, but why would she want to meet in private? What did she need to say to her but not her friends? Was it just a simple trap to lock her and her friends behind bars? Was Captain Segal part of this?

There were too many questions which seemed to be part of the normal routine in Serra’s life now. Every move was a risk. Every choice was capable of making everything worse. “I’ll go. She did stand up to Captain Segal for me. She owes me her life. We may have an ally here.”

Finn rubbed his short beard. “We’ll stay up and wait for you. Though, midnight is in a few hours. Why don’t you rest for bit?”

With everything going on, Serra had no time to slow down to rest. She’d already been fighting a headache for the past few hours and vomited her guts out. Sleep was the best thing she’d heard of all day.

“For once, dwarf, I won’t fight you on that,” she teased.

“Got something to say to me, child?” He moved and stood before her with his hands on his hips.

She smiled and hugged him. “Only that I love you.”

“All right, I’ll come and wake you in a bit,” he said then left the room to his own.

Theren stood, clenching and unclenching his hands. “Do you want me to stay?”

She did. With every fiber of her being she did. “Always.”
